وصف كتاب موجز تاريخ الجنون تأليف (روي بورتر)
يستقصي المؤرخ البريطاني روي بورتر(2002-1946) الكيفية التي قاربت بها الثقافة الغربية الجنون وعالجته. ويبدأ الكتاب بعرض مفهوم الجنون كما ساد في العصر السابق على الكتابة، وذلك حين نظر إلى الجنون بوصفه تلبّساً شيطانياً أو إلهاماً سماوياً. ويتتبع المؤلف تأثير هذه الأفكار التي ظلت حاضرة في الغرب حتى القرن الثامن عشر، ثم يتناول مولد العلوم الطبية مثلما طوّرها فلاسفة الإغريق وأطباؤهم. كما يتولى بالدرس معاني الجنون وموتيفاته الثقافية التي مثلت مادة ثرة متحت منها الفنون والآداب. ولا يفوت المؤرخ البريطاني أن يمتحن الدوافع التي قادت إلى مأسسة الجنون، وقد بلغت ذروتها أواسط القرن العشرين، حين احتجز نصف مليون مريض في الولايات المتحدة ونحو المئة والخمسين ألفاً في المملكة المتحدة داخل المصحات. وعقد المؤلف فصلاً أخيراً كرّسه للحديث عن الطب العقلي الذي دعي القرن العشرين باسمه، مسلّطاً الضوء على تطوراته التي مثلها صعود التحليل النفسي وسقوطه، فضلاً عن تناوله ابتكاراته الرئيسة في العلاجات الدوائية. ويختم المؤرخ البريطاني كل ذلك بتقييم موجز لموقع الطب العقلي علمياً وعلاجياً، مع إطلالة القرن الواحد والعشرين، متسائلاً إن كان التاريخ المتنوع للطب العقلي يخبر عن أي قيمة لهذا المشروع.
