هيرمان ميلفيل: المولود في ١ أغسطس ١٨١٩م روائي أمريكي وكاتب قصص قصيرة وكاتب مقال وشاعر. حاز شهرة أدبية واسعة في أربعينيات القرن التاسع عشر بفضل أول ثلاثة أعمال له، لكن بوفاته عام ١٨٩١م كان قد نسي تمامًا. ميلفيل هو أول كاتب تجمع «مكتبة أمريكا» أعماله الكاملة وتعيد نشرها.

ولد في "نيويورك" وعمل بحاراً في سن التاسعة عشرة، وبعد ذلك بأربعة أعوام على وجه التقريب بدأ يطوف البحار كصائد للحيتان. وقد ألهمته رحلاته البحرية غير العادية معظم أعماله الأدبية، وقد لافت كتاباته الأولى نجاحاً سريعاً. وعلى النقيض من ذلك فإن روايته، "موبي ديك"، التي ظهرت سنة 1851م، مرت دون أن تلاحظها عيون معاصريه، وكذلك كل المؤلفات التي نشرت بعد ذلك. مات "هيرمان ميلفيل" فقيراً مهملاً. أما اليوم، فإن روايته "موبي ديك" تعتبر أروع أعماله الأدبية وواحدة من أكبر "كلاسيكيات" الأدب الأمريكي.
"موبي ديك" الحوت الأبيض الذي لا يكمن اللحاق به. "موبي ديك" العدو اللدود للقبطان "أشاب" الذي أقسم بإهلاكه منذ أن قضم ساقه.. ممتلئاً بالكراهية، طارد القبطان "أشاب" الوحش في كل المحيطات. وخاف طاقم مركبه، ورأوا أن الحوت الأبيض أداة للعدالة الإلهية.
ولكن القبطان لم يتوقف، حتى يروي غليله.
