ولد الكاتب الأمريكي هيرمان ملفل في مدينة نيويورك، وسافر في العام 1837 إلى ليفربول، انكلترا، على متن سفينة اشتغل خادماً فيها. مارس التعليم في إحدى المدارس لدى عودته إلى الولايات المتحدة، ثم أبحر في العام 1841 إلى البحار الجنوبية على متن سفينة لصيد الحيتان. وبعد رحلة استمرت ثمانية عشر شهراً، غادر السفينة في جزر ماركيساس، وعاش مع رفيق له مدة شهر بين السكان الأصليين، الذين هم من آكلي لحوم البشر، ثم فرّ على متن سفينة تجارية أوسترالية إلى بابيت في تاهيتي وسجن فيها مؤقتاً، عمل في الحقول، ثم أبحر إلى هونولولو في هاواي، وهناك التحق بالبحرية الأميركية كبحار. وبعد تسريحه في العام 1844، اتخذ الكتابة مهنة، وشارك في حياة بوسطن الأدبية. استفاد هيرمان ملفيل من مغامراته البحرية في توفير الجدّ الملائم لمؤلفاته التي تدور حول حياة البحار وتصف الأقطار النائية. ومن أشهرها: "تايبي: نظرة سريعة إلى حياة البوليفيز" 1846، و"أومو: قصة المغامرات في بحار الجنوب" 1847، و"موبي ديك" 1951؛ وهي الرواية التي بين أيدينا وهي أيضاً تدور حول حياة البحار. وقد سبقت في هذا الكتاب بلغة مبسطة يمكن للناشئ، طالباً أم قارئاً، فهم معانيها بسهولة وزيادة في الفائدة تمّ تضمين هذا الكتاب النص الإنكليزي مترجماً بالعربية مع طائفة من الأسئلة التي تتيح المجال بمناقشة الرواية ومغزاها.
