راودتني فكرة الكتابة في تاريخ بلاد السودان كما ورد في المصادر العربية الأصيلة، لكن حال دون تحقيق ما راوَدَني حوائلُ دامت أكثر مِن عقد من الزمن.. إلى أن عزمت على الكتابة في موضوع يتَّصِل بتاريخ بلاد السودان، تناولته مصادر عربية قارَنَتْ أو قارَبَتْ زَمانَ ومَكانَ أحداثِه، بتفصيلٍ ودقة وعناية عَزَّ مثلها في موضوعات تاريخ بلاد السودان.
وطبقت فيه منهجا أساسه احترام وقائع التاريخ وأحداثه وعدم تجاوزها لا شكلا ولا مضمونا، والالتزام بالنص ومزايلة الذاتية، والبُعد عن التَّسَرُّع إلى نتائجَ لا تؤيّدُها مقدمات عِلميّة، بل تُفرِزُها خَلفيات وقناعات هي من نسج تراكمات ورواسب لا تُجدي نَفعا في ميزان المنهجية الرَّزينة، مع التفريق الواضح بين ما يفيده النص واستنتاجاتي...
وهو موضوع: منسا موسى وحَجَّته المشهورة في نهاية الربع الأول من القرن الرابع عشر الميلادي (الثامن الهجري).
والذي أثار عزمي وجدده حديثٌ عارض بيني وبين بعض من تعودت محاورته في تاريخ بلادنا؛ ذكر أن بعض الجماعات لا وجود لها في كتب التاريخ، وأن منهم جماعة منسا موسى؛ فعزمت على تحقيق الفكرة التي كانت روادتني قبل عقد من الزمن؛ ليكون جوابا عن طرح زميلي، وكانت أخبار منسا موسى مناسبة لما أردت من الجواب؛ لسعتها وحجمها الكبير نسبيا في المصادر، كما كان للرغبة إلى الجواب أثر في المنهجية وأسلوب الكتابة؛ من التركيز على المرجعية والهدف إلى قوة التوثيق، وتخصيص جزء كبير لدراسة المصادر بتنويعها وإجلاء تعلّقها وبيان حجم تناولها..؛ حتى كان من قول صاحبي بعد قراءة الكتاب: لم أتصور أن أمثال الذهبي وابن كثير وابن حجر.. تحدثوا عن شخصية تاريخية من بلاد السودان بهذه الكيفية التي ظهرت في الكتاب.
