يصف دوستويفسكي في هذا العمل المآسي والأحزان والآلام والأماني الضائعة التي قضاها في تلك الثكنة في ذاك المكان البعيد النائي من روسيا، بل كان كما يقول قد أصابه ( اهتياج اطلاعي ) فكان يتمعن في المساجين ويدرس حالتهم من نزواتهم وشرورهم وخيرهم حتى حركاتهم فيتوصل إلى أن يقول بشيء من الحذاقة والصبر ( إن في كل مكان أشرار، ولكن الأشرار أنفسهم يشتملون على خير! ومن يدري، فقد لا يكون هؤلاء الناس شرا من الآخرين الذين هم طلقاء أحرار..) وأضاف (..قلت ذلك لنفسي وأنا أهز رأسي متحيراً.! ولم أكن أدري إلى أية درجة كنت على حق! ) كان دوستويفسكي في منفاه متفكرا ومتعجباً من حال السجناء الذين يسميهم الشعب الروسي (عاثري الحظ )، وكيف لا يكون على هذه الحالة وهو الذي لم يفارقه الفكر والأدب لا قبل أن يسجن ولا بعده، بل أكاد أجزم أنه الوحيد من بين المئتي شخص المحشورين في ثكنات حقيرة، أقول الوحيد الذي كان على اطلاع واسع ومعرفة هائلة. وما كتبت هذا إلا من كثرة أسئلة السجناء التي يلقونها عليه حينما يلتقون به خلف الثكنات مع كلب السجن الوحيد بولو ، فيسألونه مثلا عن التقاء الوجهين من الأرض، أو يسألونه عن أمريكا، أو عن نابليون وعلاقته بمن قبله.
