لا شيء يحجبني عن التذكّر غير أن الذاكرة ليست ساخنة كل حين، هناك أشياء نتذكّرها لأن أشياء أخرى زاحمتها أو ذكّرت بها، وهناك أشياء أخرى تظل لشدة قسوتها تتذكّرها كل لحظة تمر فيها لكنك تعجز عن كتابتها أو البوح بها حتى لنفسك.
قُسّم هذا الكتاب إلى ثلاثة فصول: الفصل الأول شمل التشكلات الأولى، وأتاح المجال لمعرفة الخلفية الثقافية التي تشكل أي كاتب، ولم أنسَ في الوقت نفسه أن أذكِّر بالشاعر الذي كنتُه ومنه عبرتُ إلى دائرة الصحافة، وهو فصل أردت من خلاله أن أستكمل ما بدأته في كتابي الأول (الرحيل عن الجنة). وخصصتُ الفصل الثاني لجولاتي الميدانية مراسلا تلفزيونيا في شرق إفريقيا (الصومال؛ لتغطية الحرب هناك، وإريتريا وجيبوتي وشرق السودان)، وعرَّجتُ على إثيوبيا التي ذهبت إليها سائحًا.
أما الفصل الثالث فهو جزءٌ مما كتبته عقب عودتي من القاهرة بعد تغطيتي أحداثَ «ميدان رابعة العدوية» الدامية، وسأترك للقارئ الحكم عليها، فهي بنت تلك السنوات، وقد كتبتها متأثرًا بالجريمة؛ وأتذكر أنني بعد عودتي من هناك لم أستطع الإمساك بالقلم والكتابة بسبب الصدمة التي تلقَّيتُها لكنني أجبرت نفسي على فعل ذلك كي لا أنسى بوصفي شاهدًا على ما حدث، وبوصفها قصة مأساوية، وما كتبته عن الحادثة لا يساوي شيئًا مما يجب أن أكتبه لو كنت أستطيع أكثر.
