هذا الكتابُ يَرصُدُ تَجرِبةً خاصةً ومُؤلمةً لمُؤلِّفِه الأديبِ والشاعرِ اللبنانيِّ «توفيق الشرتوني»؛ حيثُ تُوفِّيَ أخوه «طانيوس» شابًّا صغيرًا بعدَ مَرَضٍ قصيرٍ لم يُمهِلْهُ سوى أيامٍ قليلة؛ فلوَّعتْ أديبَنا المفاجأة، وأثارتْ في نفسِهِ العديدَ مِنَ التساؤلاتِ الكُبرى عَنْ كُنْهِ الحياةِ وقِيمَتِها ومَصائرِ الناسِ بعدَ الموت، مُصطبرًا على آلامِ الفِراقِ بِأمَلِ أنْ يَكونَ في الحياةِ الآخرةِ اللقاءُ. ويبدو أن الشرتوني أَبَى على الفَناءِ أن يُنْسِيَهُ أخاه الحبيبَ؛ فَكَتبَ له رسائلَ مُتتابِعاتٍ يَرثِيهِ فيها، يُحادِثُه كما لو أنَّهُ حَيٌّ، مُستدعِيًا ذِكرَياتِهما معًا، ويُطْلِعُه على بعضٍ مِن حَوادِثِ الحياةِ اليَوميةِ وقضاياها، ليَختَتِمَ كِتابَه في النِّهايةِ بمجموعةٍ مِنَ القصائدِ الرِّثائيةِ الرَّقيقةِ لعِدَّةِ شُعراء.
