يعزو مؤلف الكتاب الكثير من هذه الأصول "وأوائل" الأشياء في العمران البشري إلى "السومريين"، فمن كان هؤلاء السومريون؟ وما أصلهم؟ ومن أين نزحوا إلى العراق؟ ومتى كان ذلك؟ والواقع أنّه ليس بالإمكان الإجابة جواباً قاطعاً على مثل هذه الأسئلة لأنّها من القضايا التاريخية التي لم يصل البحث الحديث إلى حلَّها حلاً نهائياً مجمعاً عليه وجل ما يمكن قوله بهذا الصدد أنَّ من نسمّيهم بالسومريين في تاريخ وادي الرافدين القديم كانوا قوماً ليسوا من الأقوام السامية ولغتهم غريبة لا تشبه اللغات السامية، بل هي من اللغات غير السامية، ولا يعلم زمن مجيئهم إلى وادي الرافدين.
وإنما الذي نعرفه أنهم ازدهروا بثقافتهم في القسم الجنوبي من العراق منذ حدود منتصف الألف الرابع ق.م. ومهما كان مهدهم الأصلي الذي نزحوا منه فالمعروف بين جمهور الباحثين أنَّ ما نسميه بالحضارة السومرية إنَّما نشأت وترعرعت في وادي الرافدين، وأنّهم عاشوا فيه مع الساميين ولكنهم كانوا على ما هو مجمع عليه، المؤسسين الأوائل لمقومات الحضارة والعمران، ومنهم اقتبس الساميّون في العراق أصول حضارتهم، ولا يقتصر تراثهم الثقافي بكونه أساس حضارة وادي الرافدين، بل إنّهم أثّروا في جميع أنحاء الشرق الأدنى.
