في (مكابدات الطفولة والصبا) يبدو الراوئي "سمير الفيل" شديد الإخلاص لمواجعه، بل أكثر من ذلك، حكيماً مع الحياة، وفيلسوفاً إبدعه لا يكذب أقواله.
يضم الكتاب مجموع قصص قصيرة تقترب من واقع الطبقة الشعبية، كيف يعيشون، كيف يفكرون، ما هي أحلامهم، عن أي مستقبل يبحثون؟
ينطلق الراوي من تفاصيل صغيرة في حياة أولئك الناس، ويتحدث بلسانهم، ويكشف عن همومهم، وربما يحلم معهم.
في قصة "حكاية أم شريف والبيضة الذهب" نجد حكاية شعبية تامة في منطقها ولغتها وبنيتها، أما اللغة فترتدي رداءاً تراثياً، مغلقاً سخرية شفيفة، وها نحن أمام أم شريف التي تملك دجاجة سوداء ضمن قطيعها الكبير، كانت تلك المرأة قد نالت ميراثها من أبيها، فاشترت مصاغاً، وتصادف أن هبطت لها الدجاجة السوداء مع استلامها للميراث، فارتبطت لديها بالبركة والخير.
إن ما يمنح القصص قيمتها ليس الحدث، إنما التفاصيل الصغيرة الدقيقة التي جمَلها الراوي بركام عاطفي بديع، فالحبيب في قصة (فطيمة) يأخذ من فطيمة قبيل سفره إسورة زجاجية رخيصة، وبعد العودة واكتشافه أنها تزوجت، يعود للإسورة الزجاجية (يقر بها من شفتين غاضبتين، ويلثمها في وجد مميت).
تضم المجموعة خمسة عشرة قصة قصيرة نذكر من عناوينها: "مكابدات الطفولة والصبا"، "غائبون"، "غرابيل"، "مناخوليا"، "حالة ترميم"... الخ.
