بالرغم من أن هذا الكتاب به معلومات هامة عن تاريخ المملكة العربية
السعودية وبالاخص قصة النفط وإكتشافه .. إلا أنه يتميز بانه أقرب إلى
الرواية منه إلى الدراسات التاريخية. فقد كان المؤلف ( فيلبي) شاهدا على
تلك الأحداث التى عاصرها بإقامته الجزء الأكبر من حياته على أراضي المملكة.
وقد كان الزيارة الأولى له في عام 1917 وذلك قبل إكتشاف النفط. ولهذا جاءت
القصة في كتابه من بدايتها حيث كان الجزء الأول منه في الجهود الضائعة
التى بذلت للتنقيب عن البترول. ثم الجزء الثاني وقد تناول فيه
إمتياز(الأحساء) عام 1923 ، ثم الجزء الثالث عن امتياز كاليفورنيا. وتخللت
تلك الأجزاء بعض الملاحظات والتفاصي عن المناورات والمفاوضات والتعقيدات
التى واجهتهم ثم التقدم والنجاح. أيضا من المميز لكتب (فيلبي) كوثائق
تاريخية تأتي مدعمة بالصورة الفوتوغرافية فنتقل بالكلمة والصورة إلى تلك
الفترة السابقة من تاريخ المملكة العربية السعودية.
