والهدف الأساسي لهذا المعجم هو أن يفيد منه الطالب الناشئ إلى جانب العالم المتخصص، والدارس غير الناطق بالعربية إلى جانب ابن العربية. ولا تقتصر الفائدة على فهم الأمثال، وتذليل ما يكتنف أسلوبها من صعوبة وغموض، وسرد ما وراءها من قصص طريفة، بل يتعدى ذلك إلى بيان مجالات استعمالاتها، حتى تيسر الفرصة لكل من أراد أن يستشهد بها في كتابته في المواقف المناسبة والمؤثرة، وإلى الاستفادة كذلك من معين الأمثال الذي لا ينضب من المفردات والتراكيب اللغوية والأساليب البلاغية.
وللأمثال في هذا المعجم أيضاً أهداف تربوية وخلقية، بما تدعو إليه من قيم نبيلة ومثل عليا، وبما ترسمه للمرء في حياته من أنواع السلوك الحميد، والاحتياط للأمور وحسن التصرف فيها، والإحسان في معاملة الآخرين، وبما تنهاه عنه من السلوك السيئ والتصرفات المشينة.
وتيسراً للمعجم، فقد ذيل بفهرسين هجائيين: الأول للأمثال، والثاني للموضوعات الفرعية.
