تعود فكرة هذا المعجم الى العام 1997 حين كنت أطوف في الكتب القديمة بحثاً عن موضوع يصح أطروحة للدكتوراه ، فكنت اعكف على قراءة الآثار الألأدبية و البحث فيها ثم أعود إلى كتب التراجم للتعرف على حياة أصحابها و تراجمهم عند معاصريهم ، ثم أتتبع ما كتب عنهم تاريخياً لغاية عصرنا الحاضر ، فكنت أعجب بالبعض تارة أولى ، وأشفق على آخرين تارة ثانية ، وأدهش منهم تارة ثالثة ، ويشد انتباهي غنى حياتهم وكثرة تنقلاتهم (تارة أخيرة ) فيولد بالقاهرة مثلاً وينشأ بدمشق ويمضي بعض الوقت بالقدس ، ويموت في بلاد المغرب و الأندلس ، فأشعر بالرثاء لما وصلنا إليه من تمسك بحدود ضيقة تكاد تطبق على أنفسنا .لعل التطواف في الآثار الأدبية و الانتقال منها إلىكتب التراجم قد دفعني إلى البدء بهذا المعجم ، رغبة مني في تعريف الآخرين بهؤلاء الكتّاب وما قاموا به خدمة للثقافة العربية ، ورغبة مني في مشلركة الآخرين متعة التعرف الى الكتّاب وما قدموه من ابداعات مهمة .
