يتبنّى هذا الكتاب الآراء التي تُصنِّف الرّحلة ضمن مفهوم «العمل الأدبيّ»، ويدرسها تحت ما يسمّى «أدب الرحلة»؛ كما يتضح في نماذج الرحلة التي زخِر بها التراث العربي، والتي تشير إلى قدرة القاصِّ وإبداعه؛ لأنَّ الرّحالة يسرد تجربته الخاصَّة مع الشعوب والبلدان التي يزورها أو يمرُّ بها، فيصف ما يراه، ويشغل وصفُه مساحاتٍ واسعة من الرّحلة، ثم يعمد إلى سرد رحلتِه بوصفِه بطلاً لها، ومكتشفاً، وسارداً في الآن نفسه. يُضاف إلى ذلك أنّ الرّحلات كانت تتضمَّن الكثير من المعارف والاكتشافات التي دوَّن فيها العربُ ملامح الشّعوب؛ الإنسانيّة والاقتصاديّة والمعماريّة والجغرافيّة والثقافيّة في البلدان التي زاروها أو حلّوا فيها وأقاموا.
لقد حوت رحلة ابن فضلان ما سبق كلَّه؛ ذلك أنَّها اقتنصت الفرصةَ من تلك السفارة السياسيَّة التي كلَّف بها الخليفةُ ابنَ فضلان، فأُبدِعَت عملًا سرديًّا نجح في الكشف عن سمات الشّعوب التي مرَّ بها الرحّالة ونظر إليها بعين الفاحص الخبير، مقدّمًا شهادة ما تزال حيَّة بيننا حتّى يومنا هذا.
