يعد كتاب (فيلسوف) من أمهات الكتب الفلسفية العربية التي تتناول المدخل إلى الفلسفة بصفة عامة، وقضايا الفلسفة ومشكلاتها في تاريخها. ومع أن الدكتور محمد ثابت الفندي يطالعنا في ثنايا عرضه للمذاهب الفلسفية إلا أنه اكتفى بالإنصات إلى نقد المذاهب نفسها بعضها بعضاً، مما قد يفسر على أنه عرض موضوعي لمذاهب الفلسفة، إلا أن واقع الأمر يحدثنا بأنه كان يعرض فلسفته أيضاً في ثنايا تناول الفلسفة في تاريخها.
وبالرجوع لمضمون الكتاب نجد أن المؤلف قد تناول الفلسفة في طبيعتها وفي طبيعة الإنسان، ثم يعرض لمنابع الفلسفة، وتعريفات الفلسفة وأقسامها، ونظرية الوجود أو الأنطولوجيا منذ أقدم العصور وحتى التاريخ المعاصر. ونظرية المعرفة وأغراضها، وإمكان المعرفة، وأصلها أو منبعها، وحدودها، والنزعات المثالية والمذاهب العلمية، والمذاهب الحدسي، والمذهب الفينومينولوجي، والوجود والمعرفة.
ويناقش المؤلف في ضوء كل هذه الآراء والمذاهب ما أطلق عليه بحق "اللافلسفة"، متتبعاً تياراتها المختلفة، حيث يناقش صورها وما تركز عليه من نتائج، وانتهى من استعراضه لتيار اللافلسفة والنزعات المادية أن هذه التيارات ليس لها أية نتيجة بناءة، ومن ثم فلا تفضي إلى أية استنارة.
