اعتبرت التراجيديا كلون أدبي مستقل في أواخر القرن السادس ق.م بعد ثيسبيس وفي عصر من خلفوه مباشرة: لقد صارت جزءاً من الأدب، ولكنها ما زالت نوعاً متواضعاً منه، تحتاج قواها الكامنة إلى تنمية كانت بحاجة إلى جمال المناظر وعظمة الحركة والأداء المسرحي لتمدها بالعظمة التي تفتقر إليها، كما كانت بحاجة إلى فلسفة لتزودها بمادة للتأمل. كانت هذه مهمة ايسخولوس، وكانت عظيمة الأهمية لدرجة أنه اعتبر أباً لهذا اللون من الأدب، ولم يكتب لأيسخولوس أن يكون واحداً من عباقرة العالم كله في كتابة المآسي فقط، ولكن قسم له أن يخلد في أهان الناس بوصفه مبتكراً لايقل في ابتكاره عن سلفه ثيسبيس.
