تدور احداث الرواية خلال عشر سنوات حول شخصية مصطفى أحمد عبد الهادي، يسردها مصطفى من خلال مذكراته – تلك المذكرات التي نجح أخيرا في كتابتها بعد معاناة طويلة مع الكتابة – تبدأ الأحداث منذ يوم 5 سبتمبر 2005 – نفس اليوم الذي احترق فيه قصر ثقافة بني سويف- وتمتد لعشر سنوات، نتعرف من خلالها على جوانب شخصية مصطفى، الذي نجا من الاحتراق بفضل مرض التهاب المعدة المزمن الذي يلازمه منذ طفولته، والذي حال بينه وبين الذهاب لقصر الثقافة لحضور عروض المسرح، ينقذه مرضه المزمن من الاحتراق داخل قصر الثقافة، ليدخل بعدها في احتراق يدوم لعشر سنوات متمثلا في معاناته مع مرضه المزمن، وفقده لحبيبته، وجنون صديقه سامح المفاجئ، وصراعه مع القراءة والكتابة والفن والحياة، فيقرر مصطفى الرحيل من قريته والعمل في المدينة في مجال الكمبيوتر، ولكن صراعه ما زال مستمرا، لينتهي به إلى احتراق مقر عمله الجديد، وينقذه مرضه للمرة الثانية عندما يذهب إلى الصيدلية لإحضار علاجه، تاركا سيجارته مشتعلة، فيصطدم مصطفى باحتراق أخر، فيقرر الرحيل مرة أخرى إلى مدينة جديدة، وعمل أخر، وفي أحداث ثورة يناير 2011 يحترق مقر عمله الجديد، ويتطور مرض التهاب المعدة المزمن إلى سرطان المعدة، لتستمر معاناته، وفي النهاية، وعلى سرير المرض، يستمر مصطفى في سرد مذكراته، وينجح في قيء الكتابة أخيرا، وتعود إليه حبيبته التي فقدها بعد رحيل زوجها، إنها لعبة الدوائر والمربعات التي كان مصطفى يلعبها في طفولته، رحلة المعاناة والصراع، والسؤال الكبير: لماذا لم أحترق دفعة واحدة، بدلا من احتراقي المتكرر؟
