هذا الكتاب في الأصل سلسلة دراسات أعدت لفرق حركة الشبيبة الأرثوذكسية، وقد علّقت الحركة منذ نشأتها أهمية كبرى على شرح القداس الإلهي في برامجها الثقافية، ذلك أولاً لمكانة القداس الإلهي في حياة الكنيسة، فأن كانت الكنيسة المحلية تحديداً جماعة المؤمنين المجتمعين برئاسة الأسقف حول سر الشكر، كان إذاً هذا السر محور حياة الكنيسة وقلبها النابض، وبالفعل من شاء أن يتعمق في دراسة القداس الإلهي وجد فيه كنوزاً متجمعة من المعاني الروحية والعقائدية الأساسية في الأرثوذكسية.
ثم لأن المسيحية تدعو إلى ممارسة الحياة الكنيسة فعلياً وتحت بالتالي أعضاءها على أن لا يكتفوا بحضور القداس الإلهي بل أن يشتركوا به بالإندماج الروحي والمناولة المتواترة، كان إذاً من الضروري أن تشرح الكنيسة لهم هذه الخدمة الإلهية يتمعن لكي يتسنى لهم أن يقفوا فيها موقف المشترك لا موقف المتفرج السطحي.
وقد لاحظنا أن بين العوامل التي تدفع الناس إلى الوقوف من القداس موقف الناظر إلى موضوع خارج عن كيانه، تراكم التفاسير الرمزية التي تكاثرت في العصور المتأخرة وحجبت الواقع الأصيل للقداس أي كونه إستعداداً للإشتراك ثم إشتراكاً في مائدة الرب لنصبح "مساهمي الحياة الأبدية".
هذه التفاسير التي نراها في كتب شرح القداس الموجودة باللغة العربية لها بلا شك قيمتها التقوية وقد احتفظنا ببعضها في شرحنا هذا ولكننا اجتهدنا أن نبرز، بشكل خاص، جوهر القداس العميق أي أن نظهره لا كمجموعة رموز للتأمل ولكن كفعل واحد مستمر يعاش ويساهم به.
