يعتبر هذا الكتاب من آخر الكتب التي وضعها المفكر الألماني العاصر تيودور فون أدرنو. وهو بالأساس جملة محاضرات ألقيت في جامعة فرانكفورت في الموسم الدراسي 1968 يتناول فيها موضوعات تدور حول علم الاجتماع. وتحمل تلك المحاضرات آثار مدرسة فرانكفورت التي أفسحت المجال لظهور علم النفس الاجتماعي فجاءت هذه المحاضرات لتشهد على قدرة المؤلف على استيعاب فكر عصره ومشاكله.
وهو يقول في معرض تحديده لمواقفه (لقد تعلمت أن أغادر الكنيسة) معلناً بذلك خروجه على التقاليد الأكاديمية السائدة في الأبحاث، فيجعل موضوع علم الاجتماع موضوع تحليل قائم بذاته. ويتناوله على أساس أنه العلم المجاور لعلوم أخرى كعلم النفس أو التاريخ أو تاريخ العقائد والايديولوجيات، ولذلك أيضاً يجب تقريبه منها جميعاً.
إن العلم الاجتماعي الذي يبحثه أدرنو هو موضوع معرفة، وعليه تطبق أساليب معرفة، وبالتالي فإن موضوع دراسته هو الذات العارفة والذات ابن المجتمع، والمجتمع موضوع الذات، ولكن كيف؟ إذا تماهت الذات مع المجتمع وقعنا في التشيؤ، وإذا تعالت أصبح البحث مثالياً بعيداً عن الواقع. من هذه الإشكالية، ومن البحث في أبعاد العلاقة بين الذات والموضوع تتكون أجزاء الكتاب، إنه فلسفة علم الاجتماع لا بحثاً فيه وحسب.
