هذا الكتاب ليس استعراضا لدوركهايم أو فيبر أو كونت . ولا هو تجاهل لهم، أو لسواهم؛ ولا هو تحليل لأفكار مدرسة ما وحوار مع أعلامها ورموزها. قد يكون أحيانا من زملائه، أو قد يكون أطول باعا منهم في حقل العلم الاجتماعي. ولا هو تحليل للمناهج، بل هو ذلك كله. إن العلم الاجتماعي هو موضوع معرفة، وعليه تطبق أساليب المعرفة. إنه موضوع دراسة، وآدرنو هو الذات العارفة. ولا مجال للوصول إلى نتائج إلا من خلال البحث عن هذه العلاقة الفريدة بين ذوات تريد أن تعرف، وبين موضوع تجب معرفته. ولكن المفارقة هنا مختلفة كليا، فالذات والموضوع كلاهما واحد. الذات ابن المجتمع، والمجتمع موضوع الذات. فالشبيه يعرف شبيهه كما تقول الفلسفة الإغريقية. ولكن كيف؟ إذا تماهت الذات مع المجتمع وقعنا في التشيؤ، وإذا تعالت أصبح البحث مثاليا بعيدا عن الواقع. من هذه الإشكالية، ومن البحث في أبعاد العلاقة بين الذات والموضوع تتكون أجزاء الكتاب. إنه فلسفة علم الاجتماع وليس بحثا فيه وحسب...
