دَفعَت الظروف السياسية والاجتماعية بعضًا من أدباء الشام ومُثقفيه إلى أن يتركوا أوطانهم مُرتحِلين إلى قارات العالم الجديد؛ الأمر الذي أزكى حُبهم لأوطانهم وزادهم اعتزازًا وعنايةً بثقافتهم العربية؛ فلم يَتنكروا لها أو يلتزموا ثقافة دار المَهجر، بل أَنشَئوا المحافل والجمعيات الثقافية ﮐ «الرابطة القَلمية» و«العُصبة الأندلسية» للتعريف بالعربية وآدابها، ولإمداد إخوانهم من المُهاجرين العرب بزادٍ ثقافيٍّ من شعر ونثر خَطَّته أنامل أدباء كبار، مثل: «جبران خليل جبران» و«أمين الريحاني» و«ميخائيل نعيمة». كما أصدروا المجلات والجرائد التي كان ينتظرها أهل البلاد العربية نفسها بشوق. وإيمانًا بعِظَم أثر أدباء المَهجر؛ جمع «توفيق السباعي» في هذا الكتاب بعضًا من آثارهم الأدبية؛ ليُقدمها لمن لم يعرفهم من القُراء.
