في (ليل علي بابا الحزين) يستحضر الركابي أيام عاشها قبل الإحتلال الأمريكي للعراق وصولاً إلى اللحظة الراهنة، وسيلته القص الروائي، يبدأ بها من أول يوم عاد بأسرته إلى بغداد عقب رحلة كابوسية إلى مدينة الإسلاف انتهت باعتقاله، وتشاء سخرية القدر أن يتم فك القيود على يد الأمريكي. يقول يحيى صديق الراوي في تجربة الإعتقال: "إنها لمفارقة أن يتم تحريرنا على أيدي الأمريكيين/ ووجدتني أجفل على الرغم مني؟ فبقدر منطقية ذلك الكلام لكنني لم أستطع أن أهضم فكرة أن أفاجأ بأمريكي هو الذي يفتح لي ذلك الباب الحديدي المقفل! (...). من هنا يمكن القول أن الروائي أراد الكشف عن التخبط والضياع الذي وقع فيه المواطن العربي عموماً والعراقي خصوصاً والذي جعله إما أن يخضع لنظام مستبد أو يستعين بالمحتل الأمريكي، وكلاهما مر.
