لم يخف على المتخصصين أهمية دراسة اللهجات العربية القديمة فوجهوا عنايتهم الفائقة صوبها متوخين بذلك الكشف عن حقبة مهمة من تاريخ اللغة العربية وتورها، وقد أسهمت دراساتهم في تحديد ملامح لهجات عدة، وتهافت الباحثون يدرسون كل لهجة على حدة. وقد قام المؤلف على غالب في هذا الكتاب بجمع النصوص اللهجية وكانت هذه أصعب مراحل البحث كما يقول، حيث أنها نصوص متفرقة في مصادر شتى في كتب اللغة والنحو والتفسير والمعاجم والأدب، ثم اعتمد في تحديد دراسة اللهجة على مرحلة الجمع اللغوي التي بدأت قبيل منتصف القرن الثاني، وقد اوجز في التمهيد طائفة من الأمور التي تلقي الضوء على قبيلة أسد وهى محل الدراسة والبحث، فتناول نسبها وأشر بطونها وموطنها في الجاهلية والإسلام في ثم تعرض إلى دراسة ديانة القبيلة وحياتها الاجتماعية والاقتصادية وعلاقاتها بالقبائل وموقفها من الإسلام، ثم في الفصل الأول قدم تعريفًا باللهجة لغويا واصطلاحيًا، وفي الفصل الثاني تناول المجال الصوتي، وكان المجال الصرفي مادة الفصل الثالث، أما الرابع فكان لدراسة المجال النحوي، وفي الخامس تناول مجال دلالة الألفاظ.
