رقيب في الجيش السوري وخبير في شؤون اللاسلكي، ومسؤول عن غرفة الإشارة في الأركان العامة، إطّلع بحكم وظيفته ومتابعته للأحداث على وقائع خطيرة وأسرار هامّة وتسلسل واضح لما مرّ به هذا الجزء الغالي من الوطن الكبير، وما تعلّق به شخصياً من هذه الوقائع وما عاناه مقاب وفائه لعقيدته وإلتزامه بقسمه وصدقه مع نفسه ومع قيمه وأخلاقه، وصبره الجبّار على التنكيل والتعذيب الجسدي والنفسي، على أيدي وحوش سجن المزّة الذين أقسموا على حماية الوطن والمواطنين من خلال خدمتهم العسكرية، فكانوا الجلادين والسفّاحين والقتلة والوحوش التي تلتهم أجساد المواطنين وتنهش لحومهم دون هزّة من ضمير او ذرّة من رحمة وشفقة وإنسانية هي بعض ما يفرضه عليهم قسَم مسؤولية الجندي لدى دخوله الخدمة العسكرية بالمحافظة على الوطن والمواطنين ضدّ كل إعتداء داخلي أو خارجي.
متّى أسعد، تابع تعلّمه في السجن في المدرسة التي أقامها بعض رفقائه المتقدّمين في العلم وبينهم الشاعر الرفيق "أدونيس" حتى أنه شاركه في الصياغة اللغوية لإحدى الروايات التي كان "أدونيس" يترجمها عن الفرنسية وهذا يدل على رغبة الرفيق متّى أسعد في التقدم وتطوير معلوماته وثقافته.
يؤرّخ متّى أسعد حياته الحزبية من خلال الأحداث التي رافقت ضياع فلسطين ومقتل العقيد عدنان المالكي في دمشق، وما رافقها من مؤامرات على الحزب السوري القومي الإجتماعي.
متّى أسعد مؤرخ لا كاتب سيرة، فسيرته الشخصية تأتي، على أهميتها، في المرتبة الثانية من سياق الأحداث، لأنه يتحدث عن كل ما جرى حوله لا عن نفسه فقط، ويعطي نفسه الأهمية الثانية من الأحداث.
