تستخدم الرواية تقنية( الفلاش باك) حيث يعود البطل بذاكرته إلى مراحل طفولته الأولى، و ما خلفته من غصص الفقر و الحرمان و العوَز في نفسه، و كيف شبّ عنيداً مخالفاً لآراء المحيطين به، منسلخاٌ عن بيئة لا تحترم أهواءه و أحلامه، اصطدم بأفكار أبيه، نصائح أمه، خيارات أفراد أسرته قبل الزواج
و بعده.
أسست لهذه النقمة أحداث ظلم عاشها هو و غيرهُ من أفراد تسلموا زمام القيادة و المسؤولية في الوطن، فعاثوا فيه فساداً مستغلين مناصبهم و ثروات الوطن لبناء أمجاد شخصية، أحرقت قلوب أبناء الوطن. سيما تلك الطبقة المتوسطة التي يوجعها تأرجح بندول الاقتصاد و تنهار أمام الأزمات. إنه أحد أبناء هذه الطبقة، الشاب المصاب بداء الخيبات: حباً و عملاً و دراسةً و زواجاٌ.
حتى إذا ما نشبت أحداث الوطن و عاد في ليلة إلى منزله، ليأخذ بعض حاجيات ابنته،
باغته لصوص امتهنوا سرقة المنازل التي فرغت من أصحابها جراء القصف، اختبأ ليشهد طوال الليل أحذية أعادت إليه وجع الماضي بأسره، خنقته آلام و ذكريات أحذيةٍ هرست أعوامهُ و عمره بلا رحمة.
استيقظتْ عزيمته التي كانت في غيبوبة، و عاد إلى الحياة ليفارقها برصاصٍ اخترق حذاءهُ ليظل العدو واحداً لا يتغير.
