كاتب أوكراني، عرف بكونه كاتب واقعي عن الاتحاد الاشتراكي السوفييتي السابق.
اشتهر بروايته كيف سقينا الفوﻻذ، التي تدور أحداثها خلال الحرب الأهلية الروسية.
عاش نيقوﻻي أوستروفسكي حياة قصيرة ولكن ساطعة، أقعده المرض في السرير وهو شاب في العشرين من العمر بعد الجراح الممضة التي أصيب بها في جبهات الحرب الأهلية، وفقد البصر. وكانت صحته تتردى يوماً بعد يوم.
وفي تلك الفترة بالذات بدأ يكتب كتابه الوضاء الشجاع عن الشباب والحب والكفاح في سبيل الحياة الجديدة.
في عام 1930، بدأ العمل على الرواية الأولى، كيف سقينا الفولاذ، والتي أصبحت مشهورة ومؤثرة في العالم الشيوعي. كما كتب أيضا مقالات في الصحف والمجلات وتحدث في كثير من الأحيان على الراديو.
في أبريل 1932 أصبح عضوا في فرع موسكو لرابطة الكتاب والبروليتارية، في يونيو حزيران عام 1934 انضم إلى اتحاد الكتاب السوفياتي.
في 1 أكتوبر 1935، حصل على وسام لينين.
بعد معاناة لسنوات من الشلل والمرض والعمى، أوستروفسكي توفي يوم 22 ديسمبر عام 1936، في سن 32. وفاته لم تسمح له لاستكمال روايته الثانية.

هي رواية من الواقع الاشتراكي خلال فترة حكم ستالين، ويلعب فيها بافل كورتشاجين الشخصية المركزية، وهو إسقاط لشخصية الكاتب، تربطه صداقة وطيدة به، بفكره ودمه. وهو الفتى الخارج من أتون الحرب الأهلية بعيد الثورة البلشفية، قلبه عامر بقوة وحماس للنضال لا ينفدان ولا ينطفئان وفي أفكاره تلتهب أنبل المعتقدات وأكثرها تقدمية عن الحرية وسعادة الإنسانية.
وقد تحولت الرواية إلى فيلم ، وترجمت إلى 52 لغة حول العالم.
