عاش نيقولاي سيتروفسكي (1904 -1936) حياة قصيرة ولكنها ساطعة. أقعده المرض في السرير وهو شاب في العشرين من عمره بعد الجراح الممضة التي أصيب بها في جبهات الحرب الأهلية، وفقد البصر. وكانت صحته تتردى يوماً بعد يوم. وفي تلك الفترة بالذات بدأ يكتب كتابه الرائع الوضاء الشجاع عن الشباب والحب والكفاح في سبيل الحياة الجديدة ومعظم شخصيات الرواية تستند الى نماذج واقعية، بينما كانت حياة الكاتب نفسه أساس الشخصية البطل الرئيسي بافل كورتشاغين.
لقد غدت رواية "كيف سقينا الفولاذ" الصادرة عام 1934 من عيون الأدب السوفييتي واحدا من أكثر الكتب رواجاً في الخارج وتحقق حلم نيقولاي سيتروفسكي الذي قال : إن أروع شيء بالنسبة للإنسان هو إن يغدو كل ما خلقه في خدمة البشرية حتى بعد موته.
هي رواية من الواقع الاشتراكي خلال فترة حكم ستالين تتحدث عن حياة الطفل بافل والريف الأوكراني ( بشكل عام ) في ظل الحرب الأهلية بين الجيش الأحمر وعصابات الجيش الأبيض الرجعية وجيوش الامبريالية الأجنبية التي كانت تحاول إسقاط دولة العمال والفلاحين وثورة أكتوبر.. وقد تحولت الرواية إلى فيلم ، وترجمت إلى أكثر من 52 لغة حول العالم.
