تعد الرواية العمل الأخير للأديب الإيطالي قبل رحيله عام 1995، وتعرض في إطار يمزج بين الخيال والواقع تاريخ جزيرة سردينيا الواقعة في البحر المتوسط وموطن أتسيني .. في عام 1952 وُلد الأديب والشاعر والصحفي والمترجم الإيطالي "سيرجو أتسيني" في جزيرة سردينيا الإيطالية والتي تتمتع بتاريخ عريق وبموروث ثقافي واجتماعي فريد يميزها عن بقية الأقاليم الإيطالية الأخرى، في عمله الروائي الأخير، وربما الأهم على الإطلاق، "كنا نخطو على الأرض بخفة"، يقدم "أتسيني" لِقرائه رحلة شائقة وطويلة عبر الزمن، وقراءة دقيقة لملامح هوية سكان جزيرة سردينيا التي تشكلت عبر القرون نتيجة امتزاج سكانها الأصليين بأعراق وحضارات متعددة ومتشابكة، ويقوم "أنطونيو سيتسو" أو "أنطونيو العجوز"، آخِر حراس الزمن في الجزيرة، بسرد حكايتها منذ نشأتها في فجر التاريخ إلى طفل في الثامنة من عمره ليغدو بدوره حارساً للزمن، مواصلاً بهذا تأدية أمانة حفظ ونقل هذا الموروث إلى الأجيال القادمة، يقدم الكاتب في إطار ملحمي أخاذ مجموعة كبيرة من الأقصوصات الممتعة والمتعاقبة التي توارثها جيلاً بعد جيل حراس الزمن في الجزيرة، والتي تبرز صراع شعبها ضد أعداء خرافيين وآخرين حقيقيين مثل الفينيقيين والرومان والعرب والأسبان، والذين اقتحموا على الجزيرة عزلتها محاولين طمس هويتها، ويقوم الكاتب ببراعة متناهية بمزج التاريخ والواقع بالأسطورة والخيال ليحكي لنا عن شعب قديم، "راقصو النجوم"، أتى مصادفة من الشرق ليهبط على جزيرة ساحرة مجهولة فصار جزءاً لا يتجزأ منها ومن طبيعتها، ولقد بذل الكاتب جهداً كبيراً في البحث عن حقيقة الإنسان في تلك الجزيرة، وسبر أغوار نفسه بدقة، مقدماً للقارئ صورة إنسانية معبرة، مضحكة ومبكية في الوقت ذاته، تدعونا للتأمل في هويتنا لنكتشف أننا جميعاً، ورغم خصوصيتنا الثقافية والإنسانية، نظل أبناء لعالم واحد.
