في كتابه هذا يتناول المفكر المصري "رشاد سلام" العلاقة بين الدين والاسطورة ويمضي في سياق المجال المعرفي الذي مضى فيه باحثون مثل "محمد أركون" و"نصر حامد أبو زيد" و"العفيف الأخضر" وغيرهم كثير.
ما يريد أن يقوله الكاتب هو وجوب إعادة النظر المنهجي في تاريخ الأديان، فبرأيه ما حدث على الأرض ما هو إلا نوع من الكهانة، ومن التعاليم المرتكزة على خرافات وأساطير الأولين. ووفق هذا الفهم الذي يطرحه الكاتب، فإن الديانات الأرضية والسماوية تشترك في أسس متقاربة، وأن قصص الأنبياء تتشابه وقصص اسطورية أخرى، وجدت في أساطير الشرق والغرب وبخاصة الأساطير السومرية والبابلية والهندية والفرعونية وكذلك اليونانية.
يعتبر الكاتب أنه يوجد كهنة في كل عصور التاريخ يستغلون الناس باسم الدين ولهم أدواتهم في تطويع الناس وإخضاعهم حتى أنه شبههم بالنبت الشيطاني الذي تنشق عنه الأرض فيخرج منها وهو طانع نفسه بنفسه. أما في عصرنا الحاضر "باتت الكهانة هي البديل عن "العسكر" في الغزو والاحتلال والإذلال، فهذا كاهن "نجع" أفلح في تدمير أنوثة الأنثى.. فكراً ومظهراً ولباساً، وذاك ممن زواج بين "الوراء" وعصر الفضاء، فبات يبث فكر "التخلف" في لباس عصري يخالط فيه بين "التحنيك"، "والتكنيك!...".
إنه كتاب مثير للجدل، يناقش بجرأة تاريخ الأديان والنبوات وجذورها ويصحبنا في متعة عقلية مثيرة وصادمة... جديرة بالمطالعة.
