يقدم لنا "لى كوان يو" رئيس وزراء سنغافورة الأسبق قصة نجاح دولة سنغافورة بعد استقلالها عام 1965، حين كانت عائدات القاعدة العسكرية البريطانية تمثل ثلاثة أرباع دخلها القومي، مما عزز بعض التشاؤم حول قدرة الدولة الصغيرة على النمو بمفردها. لكن الجزيرة المعزولة جغرافيا عن أسواق الدول المتقدمة، حققت أكبر معجزة اقتصادية خلال العقود الخمسة الماضية، حيث يفوق معدل دخل الفرد 23 ألف دولار، أي قرابة ضعف معدل الدخل بكوريا الجنوبية..
لقد استطاع "لي كوان يو" أن يحقق المعجزة ويبنى النهضة السنغافورية الحديثة، فقد حكم سنغافورة على مدى 31 سنة، وفي ظل نظام الحزب الواحد (حزب العمل الشعبي) الذي هيمن على البرلمان في انتخابات 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984. 1988 ، ثم وبعد 14 سنة من تولي "جوه شوك تونج" الوزارة الأولى تم تعيين ابن الزعيم التاريخي "لي كوان يو" السيد "لي هسيان لونج" على راس الحكومة، السؤال المطروح إذن كيف استطاعت سنغافورة تحقيق كل هذه الإنجازات في ظل حكم غير ديمقراطي؟ ولماذا لم يحل اعتمادها النظام "الملكي" مؤخرا دون المزيد من التقدم؟
