تناولت الرواية قضايا إجتماعية مختلفة منها الخيانة الزوجية والعنصرية ، إبتدأت الرواية من الإمرأة القوية المدعوة "سوزان" والتي خانها زوجها "جاك" بحجة الفقر والتعب من تلك المعيشة المزرية معها .
_تعرفت البطلة"إيمي" إبنة المدعوة "سوزان" على صديقة وفية "جوسلاين" والتي ضحكت على كل الجامعة وإدعت على أنها متشردة وفقيرة فقط لترى ردة فعل الآخرين منها .
_أخ البطلة"إيمي" بارد الشخصية والذي لأول مرة في حياته أحب إمرأة بصدق وكتم بسره إلى أن رآها بعينيه تتعرض للأذى فإعترف لها وأصبح هو السيئ في نظرها .
_في وسط الرواية ، ظهرت كثير من الحقائق ،والتي معظمها كان الخائن "جاك" من وراءها ومنها زاد حقد الإبن أليسون إتجاه أبيه لدرجة أنه ولا يوم ناداه بأبي بل ب"جاك" !
