الفيلسوف واللاهوتي الألماني رودولف اوتو ولد في في Peine بالقرب من هانوفر، حضر أوتو Andreanum صالة رياضية في هيلدسهايم ودرس في جامعات الاحتفالات وغوتنغن، حيث كتب أطروحته حول فهم مارتن لوثر من الروح القدس، والتأهيل له على كانط. بحلول عام 1906، شغل منصب أستاذ غير عادية، وعام 1910 حصل على الدكتوراه الفخرية من جامعة جيسن. في عام 1915، أصبح أستاذا العاديين في جامعة بريسلاو، وفي عام 1917، في جامعة ماربورغ مدرسة اللاهوت، ثم واحدة من المدارس الدينية البروتستانتية الأكثر شهرة في العالم. على الرغم من انه تلقى عدة مكالمات أخرى، بقي في ماربورغ لبقية حياته.

كتاب فكرة القدسي تأليف رودولف أوتو كتاب محورى فى الثقافة الإنسانية المعاصرة ، ساهم بتكوين معرفة القرن العشرين، ومازال حيا فاعلا منذ صدوره بطبعته الأولى عام 1917 حتى الآن. يثير التساؤلات، ويحفز العقول، فهو من الكتب القليلة التى استطاعت أن تعبر الزمن وتبقى خالدة حية وفاعلة، فهذا الكتاب ترك تأثيرا حيا فى علم اللاهوت وفلسفة الدين...، رغم أنه تعرض لانتقادات إلا أنه قام بتحريك العبقريات الفكرية.
