أحداث الرواية متداخلة جدا ومتشابكة، محبوكة بنهج تراجعي وأسلوب ساخر يمكن أن يصبح لاذعا أحيانا لكنه يبقى شهيا بنكهة الشوكولاطة
يتفق ستة أصدقاء أن ينتسبوا إلى مدرسة الضباط بالجيش حيث يحاول كل منهم أن يفرض إديولوجيته بالقوة (عسكري وإسلامي وشيوعي وليبيرالي وقومجي ووطني على الترتيب)، ولكن هذا الحلم يتحطم على صخرة بيروقراطية إذ يتم رفض أحدهم فيعلنوا سحب ترشحهم ويجلسوا في مقهى من المقاهي بالعاصمة أين تحدث لهم أمور شيقة، يلتقون خلالها بمتسول مخبر، يتناول أحدهم البوظة مع المسيح الدجال في ساحة البريد المركزي، وبعدها إثر ظروف طارئة يرجعون بسرعة إلى مدينتهم "مدينة تل الياسمين" بالقطار، خلال رحلة العودة نتعرف عليهم واحدا واحدا خاصة وليد الذي تسرق محفظته ويضرب بعصا غليظة تودي بحياته فينتقل في رحلة عجائبية إلى الجنة لكنه يستيقظ مرة أخرى في باحة مكتبة ليجد نفسه مضطرا لمحاولة إنقاذ فتاة متشردة من شقائها.
