وتدور قصة فاوست في شكلها الأساسي حول سعيه إلى اكتشاف الجوهر الحقيقي للحياة، ما يقوده إلى استدعاء الشيطان ويمثله مفستوفيليس ليبرم معه عقداً يقضي بأن يقوم بخدمته طوال حياته ليستولي على روحه بعد مماته، لكن الاستيلاء على روح فاوست مشروط ببلوغه قمة السعادة .
