في الإنسان دافع إلى المزيد من الكمال، واضح دؤوب حيث لا يهدأ أبداً. وفاوست هو نموذج الإنسان الساعي إلى المزيد من القوة أو الكمال، بوسائل خارجة عن الطبيعة هي ما يعرف بالسحر، بأوسع معانيه. ولما كان السحر تحدياً للألوهية، لأنه يدفع إلى خرق النظام الذي خلقته، فإنه استعان بقوى متمردة على الألوهية، على رأسها الشيطان ومن لف لفه من الجن. وبطل مسرحية هذا الكتاب هو هذه الشخصية التاريخية الذي ولد في أواخر القرن الخامس عشر، وتوفي على الأرجح في سنة 1543. ومسرحية فاوست هذه تجري كلها في جو من السحر والسحرة والشياطين والأرواح. فقد تعلم فن السحر في مدينة كراكونيا التي يدرس فيها السحر لوقت طويل، واحترفه علانية. وكان فاوست متشرداً مغامراً، ويتفوه بأشياء غريبة. ولما كان في البندقية (فينيسيا) أراد أن يعرض مشهداً، فقال أنه سيطير في الهواء ورفعه الشيطان في الهواء، ولكنه تركه بعد ذلك يسقط ثقيلاً إلى حد أنه حين لامس الأرض وكان قد أوشك على الموت، غير أنه لم يمت من هذه السقطة. لقد نسجت حوله حكايات وخيالات، وكتب عنه الكثير من الكتاب الروائيين، وإن شخصية بهذه الأعاجيب كان من الطبيعي أن تتحول إلى أسطورة، وفي هذه المسرحية جزء من هذه الأسطورة ولكن لا يغفل القارئ عن الأخذ بما وراء السطور من معاني لها أبعادها العميقة في الوجود الإنساني.
