وجَدَت سَكينة نفسها وحيدة مع المُلّا، فقال لها: اطمئنّي يا سَكينة خاتون، الجمعيَّة لن تتخلّى عنكِ.
دُهِشَت مِن قوله سَكينة دون يا أخت، وأيضاً خاتون، فقالَت وهي ترفع نظرها إليه: شكراً لك يا مُلّا.
نظر إليها بشهوةٍ، ثمّ ما لبث أن نهضَ من خلف كرسيّه مُتقدِماً إليها وهو يُناولها ظرف النُّقود. وعندما أخذته ودسَّته في حقيبِتِها، مدَّ يده يُداعِب خدَّها، فدفعَت اليَد.
أحسَّ المَلّا بأنَّه صُدِم، فقال: كل ما في هذه الجمعيَّة من أموال هي تحت تصرّفك يا سَكينة خاتون.
وعندما تقدَّم بفمه من وجهِها، سَدَّدَت صفعةً على وجهه وهمَّت بالخروج، لكنَّه سارعَ إلى الباب ومَنَعها.
