من نقطة قريبة من النهاية تبدأ رواية "غايب" للروائي الكويتي مشاري محمد العبيد، وتتخد مساراً دائرياً فتبدأ من حيث تنتهي، ولعل هذا الكشل الذي اصطنعه الراوي يشكل خير تعبير عن الحكاية التي يرويها لنا، والتي يمكن أن تقرأ كحالة عامّة، بقدر ما يمكن أن تقرأ حالة خاصة، فالرواية في نهاية الأمر ليست تأريخاً بل هي عمل فني في إطار التاريخ مصوغة وفق مقتضيات الفن الروائي.
يقول السارد في سنة الطبعة (الفرق)، فجر أحد أيام سنة 1923 "حملت مياه الخليج العربي بقايا السفن التي لطمتها الأمواج، لتلفظ ما بقي منها قرب الساحل. حينها، كان بوغايب مسافراً لزيارة أقاربه في رأس تنورة، سبح بو غايب برفقة عدد من الرجال نحو الحطام القادم من قلب الخليج، الذي راح يتزايد كلما اقتربوا منه ينادون، علّه يحمل ناجين، يصرخون، فينصتون هنيهة، قطع هدير الموج صراخ طفل، تناهى – على الفور – لمسمع بو غايب الذي هرع ناحيته بسرعة.. وكان ذلك الصوت، صوت ملاك صغير، باكياً، يحرك يديه الصغيرتين، وسرعان ما ضمّه بو غايب إلى صدره، وكأنه في تلك الأثناء يعلن أبوته له."
حول شخصية الطفل غايب وعلاقته بمنقذه الذي أصبح فيما بعد أبيه تتموضع أحداث الرواية وتنخرط بشخصيتها في علاقات لم تكن دائماً من صنع الإنسان بل كان للأقدار والصدفة الروائية دور كبير فيها..
وخلاصة القول إن (غايب) أثر روائي جميل وشيّق يجمع بين حكاية من ذلك الزمان الغابر – النصف الأول من القرن العشرين – بما فيها من تحولات درامية ومغامرات وحكايات وآثار، وبين خطاب روائي حديث تظنه ينتمي إلى هذا الزمان، فيستحيق الثناء بين أعمال روائية كثيرة.
