يتناول هذا الكتاب قضية محورية في علم اللغة المعاصر: عندما يقوم شخص ما باستعمال اللغة، من يكون المتكلم؟ هل هو الشخص بذاته أم أن اللغة هي التي تتكلم؟ بكلام آخر: هل يكون الشخص المتكلم مسيطراً سيطرة تامة على "الأداة" التي يستعملها، وهي اللغة، بحيث إنه يفعل بها ما يريد وفق شروطه الخاصة ويشكلها وفق تصوراته المسبقة، أم أن اللغة تلعب دوراً أساسياً في عملية التعبير، بحيث تفرض شروطها هي وتتحول "متكلماً" أو لاعباً أساسياً في العملية؟
يؤكد المؤلف (جان جاك لوسركل) أكثر من مرة في الكتاب أنه ليس رائد في مجال هذا البحث. وهو يورد أسماء باحثين كثر عالجوا هذا الموضوع سابقاً من مثل فرويد ولا كان. إلا أن إنجاز الكتاب (عنف اللغة) يكمن في طرح هذا الموضوع بشكل كلي ومتكامل، وفي تسليط الضوء على ما يحدث في اللغة وفي المتكلم في أثناء عملية التعبير.
يركز لوسركل على الجانب من اللغة (الذي يدعوه بـ"المتبقي") الذي يروغ من قواعد النحو يتفلت من قوانين الألسنة التي درسها وصاغها فرديناند دوسوسير. وهذا الجانب هو الذي يرتع فيه المبدعون والشعراء والصوفيون والمهووسون ومن شابههم. ومع أن الممارسات في هذا الجانب لا تسير بحسب قواعد النحو، إلا أنها، كما يؤكد لوسركل، تغني اللغة وترفدها ولا تنقض عراها.
