وفي الرواية: تلقت كريستين اتصالاً من شقيقها الذي كان مع صديقه برفقة فريق الإنقاذ على النهر الجليدي. أخبرها عن رؤية جنود أميركيين وانقطع الاتصال... بعدها زار شخصان منزلها، فَقَتلا ضيفها غير المرحّب به، وفشلا في قتلها. فجأة تغيرت حياتها، وأصبحت مُطاردة من دون أن تعرف السبب ولم تعرف الجهة التي تطاردها، ولم تعرف أيجدر بها الاتصال بالشرطة أم الفرار منها؟
بعد أن حصلت على مساعدة من حبيبها السابق، وهو أميركي يعمل في القاعدة الأميركية في آيسلندا، بدأت تتكشف لها حقائق مذهلة. أولاً تبين أن هناك قوات خاصة أميركية على الأراضي الآيسلندية لا تعلم الحكومة بشأنها، ثم تبيّن أن هذه القوات تقوم بمهمة في غاية السرية... وهنا تثور في الرواية العديد من الأسئلة والاحتمالات:
ما طبيعة هذه المهمة؟ ولماذا تحاط بهذه السرية؟ وهل هي متعلقة بسلاح فيروسي موجود في آيسلندا؟ أم بقنبلة هيدروجينية بدائية الصنع تعود إلى أيام الحرب العالمية الثانية؟ وما علاقة الأمر بطائرة يسعى الجيش الأميركي لاسترجاعها؟ هل تحتوي الطائرة على ذهب يعود للنازيين أم هي مرتبطة بأمور أخطر وأكثر أهمية؟ ولكن الأهم من كل هذا ما الذي ترمز إليه عملية نابليون؟ وما الهدف منها
