"وكدت أبكي أنا الآخر أيضاً... أبكي من اجلها... لأني لا أريدها باكية.. ولأن بكاءها يفطر قلبي، رفعت عيني المغرورقة بالدموع نحوها، وقلت لها فيما يشبه الهمس: أتبكين؟! ما هذه الدموع؟! حاولت أن تبتسم... ربما من أجل أن تشيع الاطمئنان في نفسي.. فتحت شفتيها كأنها تريد أن تنطق ثم أغلقتهما فجأة، وغمرني الأسى.. واستجمعت ما لدي من جرأة، قلت لها ولا زالت كلماتي خافتة: تكلمي.. إني أريد أن أسمع رنة صوتك: ألقت إلي نظرة، ربما كانت نظرة رثاء، وقالت بصوت عذب رقيق لم تطرق سمعي قبل ذلك كلمات بتلك العذوبة والرقة: إنني أختزن في عيوني دموع المضطهدين والبؤساء والمحرومين على ممر التاريخ... إنني أمتلئ بدموع الثواكل والأيتام وأحمل في قلبي آهاتهم وآلامهم جميعاً... فها هنا في هذا القلب وهذه العيون تتجمع الدموع والهموم... إلا أنها تمتزج بالآلام والأحلام الخضراء.. فلا بد أن تورق هذه الدموع وتثمر هذه الهموم، وينجلي هذا الليل الكالح الكئيب الذي يلف الأرض".
