إن موضوع علم النفس هو الإنسان، من حيث هو كائن حي يرغب، ويحس، ويدرك، وينفعل، ويتذكر، ويتعلم، ويتخيل، ويفكر، ويصبر. وهو في كل ذلك يتأثر بالمجتمع الذي يعيش فيه. وعلى هذا يمكن تعريف علم النفس بأنه علم متخصص في دراسة السلوك الصادر عن الفرد، والسلوك الصادر عن الفرد عبارة عن استجابات أو أفعال تعبّر عن دوافع داخلية أو مؤثرات خارجية.
فعلم النفس يفسر الماضي، ويكشف الحاضر، ويتنبأ بالمستقبل.
وفي بحثنا هذا نبدأ بتعريف علم النفس، ثم نتحدث عن نشأته التاريخية وتطوره، واتصاله بالعلوم الأخرى.
