يقول سعيد حسن بحيري في فاتحة الكتاب: لا يختلف الباحثون في الدراسات النصية حول قيمة كتاب (علم النص) لفان دايك وأثره في الدرس النصي، فقد نهل منه كثيرون منهم سواء المشتغلون بالدرس اللغوي أو الدرس النقدي. ومن فضل القول الخوض في التعريف بالمؤلف ودراساته الغزيرة في مجالات متنوعة. إذ يعد فان دايك واحدًا ممن شغلت بكتابته الواضحة العميقة في هذا التخصص، غير أن غلبة الجانب اللغوي لدي رجحت اهتمامي بدرسلر ودي بوجراند وسونيسكي وبتوفي وفاينريش وفوندرليش وهاينه مان وغيرهم ممن عنوا بدراسة النص دراسة نصية تجمع الجوانب التركيبية والدلالية والبراجماتية.
بيد أنني بعد تشكلت لدي رؤية واضحة حول هذا التخصص أتيحت لي فرصة العودة إلى هذا الكتاب مرة أخرى في أثناء إعارتي إلى الكويت المحررة، فقرأته مرارًا، ثم وجدت أن في الترجمة إضافة إلى المكتبة العربية، ونفعًا للمشتغلين بهذه المباحث التي عنى بها فان دايك في كتابه وبخاصة نظريته حول الأبنية الكبرى والقواعد الكبرى وكيفيات تطبيقها على نصوص مختلفة وإمكان تعديلها أو الإضافة إليها، وهو أمر لا نشك في أن المؤلف يسعده ذلك فقد أشار إلى ذلك مرارًا في تطبيقاته.
ونجد أن المؤلف يتناول في الفصل الأول علم النص، ثم في الفصل الثاني يعرج على النص والنحو، والفصل الثالث يعالج فيه البراجماتية: النص والأحداث الكلامية والسياق، وفي الفصل الرابع يتحدث عن أبنية أسلوبية وبلاغية، ثم يتناول في الخامس الأبنية العليا، ويفرد الفصل السادس للحديث عن سيكولوجيا استيعاب النص، والفصل السابع يتحدث عن النص والتفاعل- المحادثة
