يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوع علم الاجتماع ومجالاته، والظواهر الاجتماعية، والتي هي موضوع هذا العلم، كما يتناول علاقة هذا العلم بالعلوم الاجتماعية الاخري، وقد استند الكتاب الي عديد من المراجع يمكن تقسيمها الي مراجع عربية، ومراجع أجنبية مترجمة، وثالثة مراجع أجنبية.
وينقسم الكتاب الي خمسة فصول تناول الفصل الاول التعريف بعلم الاجتماع، حيث ان تعريف علم الاجتماع ليس بالامر السهل، ولا تزال تمثل واحدة من المشاكل الجوهرية، بالتالي فقد اختلف علماء الاجتماع في تعريفهم لعلمهم، وتعددت هذه التعريفات، وتناول الفصل الثاني علم الاجتماع وجدارته كعلم، وهل ينطبق مصطلح "علم" علي "علم الاجتماع"، ويشير كذلك هذا الفصل الي الموضوعات التي يدرسها علم الاجتماع، وخصائص هذا العلم، واهميته، وفوائده بالنسبة للفرد والمجتمع، ودور رجل الاجتماع، وتناول الفصل الثالث الظواهر الاجتماعية وتعريفها.
ويلقي الفصل الرابع الضوء علي نشأة علم الاجتماع كعلم مستقل قائم بذاته،وليفصل في القضية التي مؤداها لمن كان الفضل في نشأة هذا العلم من بين رواده الاوائل، وقد انتقي المؤلف في هذا الفصل بعض الفلاسفة والعلماء الذين اسهموا في نشأة علم الاجتماع، حتي نتجنب الالمام بآرائهم جميعا، وهم سقراط وافلاطون، وارسطو، وابن خلدون، واوجست كونت، وهربرت سبنسر، اميل دور كايم، اما الفصل الخامس والاخير فيتناول علم الاجتماع بالعلوم الاجتماعية الاخري.
