يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوع علم الاجتماع ومجالاته، والظواهر الاجتماعية والتى هى موضوع هذا العلم، كما يتناول علاقة هذا العلم بالعلوم الاجتماعية الاخرى.
وينقسم الكتاب إلى خمسة فصول تناول الفصل الأول التعريف بعلم الاجتماع،حيث أن تعريف علم الاجتماع ليس بالامر السهل ولا تزال تمثل واحدة من المشاكل الجوهرية ، وتناول الفصل الثاني علم الاجتماع وجدراته كعلم وهل ينطبق مصطلح "علم: على "علم الاجتماع" ويثير كذلك هذا الفصل إلى الموضوعات التى يدرسها علم الاجتماع، وخصائص هذا العلم واهميته، وفوائدة بالنسبة للفرد والمجتمع ودور رجل الاجتماع.
وتناول الفصل الثالث الظواهر الاجتماعية وتعريفها وكذلك الرق بين الظواهر والوقائع والنظم والانماط.
ويلقي الفصل الرابع الضوء على نشأة علم الاجتماع كعلم مستقل قائم بذاته وليفصل في القضية التى مؤادها لمن كان الفضل في نشأة هذا العلم من بين رواده الأوائل.
أما الفصل الخامس والاخير فيتناول صلة علم الاجتماع بالعلوم الاجتماعية الأخرى.
