أحمد فريد رفاعي: مؤرخ وأديب مصري، تخرج في كلية الآداب بجامعة القاهرة. كان مديرًا للصحافة والنشر بجريدة المؤيد، ونشر العديد من المقالات والكتب، ومن أهم أعماله كتاب «عصر المأمون» و«الشخصيات البارزة التاريخية». توفي بالقاهرة عام ١٩٥٦م.

يعتبر عصر المأمون من أزهى العصور في تاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية، وذلك في كافة مناحي الحياة السياسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية والعسكرية والعلمية والأدبية، فقد استطاع المأمون أن يطيح بأخيه الأمين في الصراع على سدة الحكم بعد وفاة والدهما هارون الرشيد، وأن يوحِّد أركان الدولة الإسلامية، ويخضعها لحُكمه ويقضي على كافة جيوب التمرد داخلها، وقد عُرف المأمون برجاحة عقله، وحبه للعلم والعلماء، حيث تبحَّر في الفلسفة وعلوم القرآن، كما درس الكثير من المذاهب، حتى قيل عنه إنه لو لم يكن المأمون خليفة لصار أحد علماء عصره! ولكن إن خسرت الحضارة الإسلامية المأمون عالمًا، فقد كسبت مقابل ذلك كثيرًا من العلماء، حيث كان المأمون حريصًا على رعاية العلماء وتوفير كل ما يحتاجونه، كما اهتم ببناء المكتبات والمستشفيات، وشجع على نشر العلم، كل هذه الأمور كانت كفيلة بأن تدفع المؤرخ أحمد فريد الرفاعي إلى التأريخ لهذا العصر المزدهر، وبيان ما كان فيه، على التفصيل والإجمال، خاصة وأن التاريخ الإسلامي — بشكل عام — ما زالت تعوزه المصادر الجادة كما يعوزه التنظيم والترتيب والتحقيق والاستقراء، فما بالنا إذا تعلق الأمر بفترة هامة كهذه من تاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية.
