أحمد فريد رفاعي: مؤرخ وأديب مصري، تخرج في كلية الآداب بجامعة القاهرة. كان مديرًا للصحافة والنشر بجريدة المؤيد، ونشر العديد من المقالات والكتب، ومن أهم أعماله كتاب «عصر المأمون» و«الشخصيات البارزة التاريخية». توفي بالقاهرة عام ١٩٥٦م.

يُقدم كتاب "عصر المأمون" لكاتبه أحمد فريد رفاعي، عرضاً لعصر الخليفة المأمون، إذ يعتبر عصره من أكثر العصور تقدماً في تاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية، ويشمل هذا التقدم مختلف مجالات الحياة بدءًا من الحياة العسكرية، والعلمية، والثقافية، والأدبية، والسياسية، وانتهاءً بالحياة الاجتماعية، وقد تمكن الَمأمون من الإطاحة بأخيه الأمين وعزله عن الحكم، وذلك في الصراع الذي كان دائراً على تولي الحكم، وذلك بعد التحاق والدهما هارون الرشيد بالرفيق الأعلى، كما استطاع المأمون توحيد صفوف الأمة الإسلامية وإخضاعها لحُكمه، والقضاء على جميع خلايا التمرد النائمة، حيث كان يُعرف عن المأمون بأنّه محبٌ للعلم والعلماء، وذا عقلٍ راجحٍ، وقد تعمق كثيراً في علوم القرآن الكريم والفلسفة، وقد درس فقه المذاهب، وقد كان المأمون حريصاً كل الحرص على تقديم يد العون والمساعدة لكل عالم، كما اهتم بإقامة المستشفيات وبناء المدارس والمكتبات، وكل هذا الزخم وأكَثر، دفع يالمؤرّخ أحمد فريد الرفاعي أن يؤرخ عصر المأمون، وأن يكتب عن تلك الفترة التاريخية في حكمه، حيث يعد هذا الكتاب مصدراً رائعاً من من مصادر التاريخ، خصوصاً في ظل قلة المصادر المتاحة في هذا الشأن.
