يشكل هذا الكتاب مقاربة أنثروبولوجية تطبيقية لحضارة الإنكا، التي تعد من الحضارات ما قبل الكولومبية أو العهد ما قبل الكولومبي، بمعنى أنها من الحضارات التي قامت في القارة الأمريكية قبل وصول كريستوفر كولومبس إليها أو ما قبل عصر رحلاته (1492 – 1502). ومن خصوصية هذه الحضارات أنها نشأت وتطورت على مدى آلاف السنين بنحو مستقل من دون تأثير حضارات باقي مناطق العالم. والإنكيون من المجموعات الاجتماعية التي عاشت في مرتفعات الأنديز، وأصحاب إحدى تلك الحضارات. ولهذا الكتاب أهمية في مستويين اثنين: مقاربة تطبيقية لإعادة فحص وتحديث حضارة من حضارات العالم في أواخر العصر الوسيط الغربي وفجر العصور الحديثة أو النهضة (من القرن الخامس عشر حتى القرن السادس عشر)، وتعريف بتفاصيل حياة جماعة اجتماعية أسست اكبر إمبراطورية في نصف الكرة الغربي قبل الاستعمار الأوروبي لأمريكا. فقد طوّع الإنكيون الثقافات كلها التي عاشت في غرب أمريكا الجنوبية ما أدى إلى تكوينهم جعبة مكتنزة من الخبرات في القيادة العسكرية والحكم وإدارة البلاد التي فتحوها وشعوبها ومواردها.
