تبدأ أحداث الرواية من غرفة الطبيب أدهم باشا المصاب بفقدان جزئي للذاكرة القريبة , نتيجة صدمة نفسية تعرض لها وعلى إثرها توقف عن مزاولة مهنة الطب وانزوى في عزلته .
يدور السرد حول تاريخ الشخصية الرئيسية أدهم وعدد من الشخصيات التي نراها في محيطه , ويعكس العمل من خلال أحداثه المتتابعة تفاصيل التاريخ السوري المعاصر على المستوى الفردي والجمعي على حد سواء , ويبين بواقعية تفاصيل غير قابلة للنسيان تمخض عنها ماتعيشه البلاد اليوم من حرب هستيرية .
جاء العنوان عتب على الذاكرة رداً على سؤال هو الأكثر تداولاً في عالمنا العربي
. كيف وصلت سورية إلى هذه المرحلة من الدمار ؟
وكأن النص رحلة في مسالك الذاكرة السورية , وعملية كشف عن تفاصيل ربما غابت عن ذهن الكثيرين
بالتالي نصل من خلال مراحل النص وأحداثه وتراكماته أن ما نحن عليه اليوم من شرذمة سياسية وإجتماعية هو ليس كما يروج له من مؤامرات وإنما هو تراكمات إجتماعية بالدرجة الأولى قادتنا وكامل الشعب إلى هذا المنزلق الذي نشعر اليوم بصعوبة الخروج منه .
عتب على الذاكرة نلخيص مأساة ماقبل الحرب والويلات التي يعاني منها الشعب في الداخل السوري ضمن صورة إجتماعية تؤكد على الإنهيار الأخلاقي الذي كان سبباً رئيساً في عملية تدمير النسيج المجتمعي وتمزيق الروابط الأسرية إن كان على حساب الدين أو التحزب السياسي .
وأخيراً عتب على الذاكرة رسالة إلى مجتمع نطالبه بصحوة ضمير حتى يعود أقل مايمكن إلى ماكان عليه .
الأخلاق سبيلنا لبناء المجتمع في ظل ما عصفت بمجتمعاتنا رياح الفساد على كل المستويات .
