تدور أحداث هذه القصة في منطقة ريفية جبلية في الفترة الزمنية التي تبعت انتهاء الحكم العثماني للمنطقة بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى. بعد تلك الحرب دخلت شعوب المنطقة في عصر التأثر بالثقافة الغربية بشكل مباشر وغير مباشر. في هذه المنطقة، بالإضافة إلى عملها الحيوي اليومي كافحت المرأة بشكل أسطوري صامت ضد الاستعمار والاحتلال الدخيلين، في الجانب الآخر من حياتها في المجتمع عانت الفتيات والنساء من الحرمان والإهمال والكبت وطمس الشخصية. يبدي المؤلف تعاطفه بل تحيزه لجانب المرأة، ويود لو يرى المساواة تطبق بحذافيرها بين الجنسين الذكر والأنثى في المجتمع. في "عبيدة والذئاب" وقع جل عبء المسؤولية الحقيقية العملية في الحياة على الأم "عبيدة". لم تنل "عبيدة" الكثير مقابل ذلك العمل الضخم الذي استمر على مدى ما يزيد عن الثمانين عاماً من العمر. نسرين مراد
