بيت مهجور وآخر مسكون وتدور الأحداث بينهما. هنالك ثمة أشياء تعبث بالجوار. جرائم شنيعة لم يُعلم عن مرتكبيها شيء. سحر أسود وكهنة يعبثون بأقدار الناس. وظلال.. ظلال على وجه القمر.
هدوء عجيب ينسدل على المكان، وضوء خافت تجتاز أشعته فتحات الباب الخشبي المغلق، لتلقي ببعض الظلال على مرآة قديمة. الغبار يعلوها كأنها تركت منذ أمد بعيد. والأتربة التي تغطي أرضية المكان تبعث بعض الرهبة وخاصة تلك الآثار المرتسمة عليها. آثار أقدام حديثة تمتد عبر الردهة لتنتهي عند إحدى الغرف المؤصدة. يُفتح بابها دفعة واحدة، ومن خلفه تظهر مرآة أخرى، ولكن هذه المرة تزدان بالزخارف الزاهية المطلية بالأصفر الذهبي، وبريقها الأخاذ يخطف الأبصار. بدت وكأنها جديدة تزهو بجمالها وروعة تصميمها. وبالرغم من الظلام الدامس، تنعكس على سطح المرآة صورة لفتاة رائعة الجمال تمشط شعرها، تستدير لتطارد فتى أخذ منها المشط وركض. تختفي صورتها لتنعكس أخرى لرجل ينهر إمرأة والتي تنهار في البكاء. مرت عدة دقائق ليعلو صوت أقدام تتهادى بلا أثر لصاحبها. صوت الخطوات على الأرض الخشبية كان واضحاً بشدة ليخترق حاجز الصمت.
