ما هو تعريف الحياة؟ كيف أمكن لمادة كيميائية عضوية أن تكتسب خاصية (الحياة) لتتحول إلى هذا التنوع الخرافي الذي نشهده اليوم في مليارات الأنواع الحية؟
– من أعماق أعماق الخلايا، الDNA والRNA وكيفية تناسخهما والتشفير الجزيئي، إلى تفسيرات (أو محاولات لوضع تفسيرات) لبداية الحياة..
إلى ظروف الأرض البدائية وكيف كانت، وكيف (ربما) ساهمت في وجود المادة العضوية التي نشرت الحياة بعد ذلك.
أفضل جزء (بالنسبة لي) هو الذي شرح فيه الاحتمالية العلمية لفكرة البذور الكونية (Panspermia) والتي تقول بأن الحياة أصلها غير أرضي.. هل هي نظرية يجب أخذها في الاعتبار؟ أم أنها مجرد خيال علمي؟
ويجيب الكاتب ( بعد أن وضعها تحت شروط اختيار خاصة بالنظريات) بأن ميله يتجه نحو كونها نظرية يجب أن تؤخذ بعين الاعتبار بعد كل شئ..
ثم يحاول أن يبحث عن إمكانية لإرسال بكتيريا أرضية للفضاء، لتتكاثر وربما تتطور هناك على كوكب بعيد، محيطا الفكرة بجوانب عديدة من بينها:
1- معايير اختيار البكتيريا المناسبة (لا تحتاج أكسجين، تنجو من الصدمات، الإشعاعات الكونية لا تؤثر عليها بالقدر الكافي، إمكانية تجميدها واستعادتها مرة أخرى بعد رحلة ربما تدوم لمئات السنين)..
2- اختيار الصاروخ المناسب لهذه المهمة الخطيرة، الوقود اللازم له، والسرعات المحتمله لانطلاقه ليصل إلى كواكب بعيدة، والمشاكل التي تعيق تحقيق الوصول لتلك السرعات الكبيرة.
3- خصائص الحاويات التي ستستخدم لتخزين تلك البكتيريا والتي ستنتشر على الكوكب الجديد.
